As a Mechanic II, this is the advance level in the Mechanic series, minor over site and directing of other mechanics in maintenance repairs and will be expected to comply with Safety and EPA procedures,performing routine or preventative maintenance repairs, air and hydraulic brake repairs, tire repairs, and other duties as assigned. This class will perform tasks and duties that require independent thinking and judgment with little to no supervision.

  • Disassemble parts or equipment for inspection, diagnosis and repair
  • Use electronic testing equipment to isolate and adjust malfunctions in fuel, ignition, and emissions control systems, providing recommendations for repair or resolution
  • Repair, replace, or overhaul parts as diagnosed
  • General maintenance such as: remove and balance tires, reline and adjust brakes and align front ends and suspension systems
  • Diagnose and repair transmissions and more advanced mechanical systems
  • Handles all welding and machining requests

JOB SUMMARY :

This class will perform tasks and duties that require independent thinking and judgment with little to no supervision.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS :

  • Disassemble parts or equipment for inspection, diagnosis and repair
  • Use electronic testing equipment to isolate and adjust malfunctions in fuel, ignition, and emissions control systems, providing recommendations for repair or resolution
  • Repair, replace, or overhaul parts as diagnosed
  • General maintenance such as: remove and balance tires, reline and adjust brakes and align front ends and suspension systems
  • Diagnose and repair transmissions and more advanced mechanical systems
  • Handles all welding and machining requests
  • Clean up work area and tools between job assignments.
  • Report any missing or damaged tools to the Shop Manager.
  • Perform all duties in a safe manner.
  • Insure that motorcoaches are kept as clean as possible.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE :

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • 3 7 years experience required
  • ASE Mechanic Certification preferred

Knowledge of:

  • Methods, materials, equipment, and tools used in vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Standard practices, equipment and tools of the automotive and equipment mechanical trade.
  • Principles and practices of diesel and gasoline engine repair and maintenance.
  • Basic principles of DVIR and Work Orders.
  • Shop mathematics.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety procedures.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems of diesel and gasoline engines.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical systems of diesel and gasoline engines.

Environment: Work is performed primarily in a shop environment; Chemicals (Proposition 65 Regulations) occasional field environment with some travel from site to site; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, gases, and all types of weather and temperature conditions; incumbents may be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends.

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a mechanic shop

environment; walk, stand, and sit for prolonged periods of time; frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch,

crawl, climb, reach, and twist; push, pull, lift, and/or carry 60 pounds to heavy amounts of weights; operate assigned equipment and vehicles; and to verbally communicate to exchange information. Confine space within the buses.

Vision:

See in the normal visual range with or without correction.

Hearing:

Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

Ability to:

  • Perform a variety of duties in diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing vehicles, equipment and components
  • Maintain a variety of shop and repair records and logs.
  • Use various hand and power driven shop tools.
  • Prepare and maintain clear and accurate reports.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions including service literature.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Perform a variety of welding work.
  • Communicate approximate time and materials/parts needed for work.
  • Basic knowledge of air condition.
  • Ability to determine if vehicles should be out of service.
  • Basic knowledge of after treatment system and cleaning procedures.
